About Us

The Indigenous Deaf of Canada Committee (IDCC) commits to creating a sacred space for the Indigenous Deaf and Hard of Hearing people to reclaim their identity by rekindling a connection with their culture, language, and community. In the fall of 2023, the IDCC will launch the first bi-annual National Indigenous Deaf Cultural Gathering (NIDCG). The IDCC is committed to removing all barriers for Indigenous Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, so they can continue their journey to reconnect with their culture.

Accessibility is an integral part of the reconciliation process.

Our Mission

Our Vision

The bi-annual National Indigenous Deaf Cultural Gathering is the first iteration of an in-person, interactive, and inclusive event. We will provide a two-day event of in-person keynote speakers, panels, spotlight sessions, and workshops. Alongside the workshops and breakout sessions, guides offered by Spiritual Healers and Elders to participate in sacred practices such as sweat lodges, cedar baths, and reiki healings will also be available.

To ensure all of this is accessible, the ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation will be provided. For those who require Langue des signes du Québec (LSQ) interpretation, please send us a request or fill out a registration form.

In the recent upswell of an ongoing reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and Canada, we are seeing more Indigenous youths reconnect with their culture, language, and community. The same cannot be said for Indigenous Deaf and Hard of Hearing people due to the existing barriers in their communities that prevent them from reconnecting with their culture.

The National Indigenous Deaf Culture Gathering is committed to creating a barrier-free space for our Indigenous members who identify as Deaf or Hard of Hearing to gather together and learn about the rich history of Indigenous peoples, culture, and sacred practices. Accessibility is an integral part of the reconciliation process.
